Support our mission to support local conservation by contributing a donation.

One hundred percent of donations go to supporting the following local initiatives:

CREER

CREER (Comité Regional de Espeleobuceo, Ecología y Regulación) represents the interests of cave and cavern (cenote) divers in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is heavily involved in promoting the conservation of local diving in caves and cenotes, maintenance of guide lines, and developing safety regulations for local cenote diving.

As all of the local cenotes are privately owned by individual communities and landowners, it is likely that many of these amazing dive sites would not be safe or accessible without the ongoing work of unpaid CREER volunteers.

Donations allow us to maintain safe cave/cavern line, conduct education and regulation of guiding activities, and promote safe environmental practices in these amazing dive sites.

Saving Our Sharks Foundation (SOS) is dedicated to protecting shark populations in a sustainable way, by creating unique initiatives to support local communities' livelihoods.

Until fairly recently, local shark fishing licenses were still being issued by the Mexican government. Although new licenses are no longer being issued, those fishermen who have been “grandfathered” by this policy continue to support their families through fishing of the same sharks that we see during our seasonal shark excursions.

Among many other shark conservation initiatives, SOS has been supporting these fishermen in transitioning to conservation activities by:

  • Training fishermen on conservation and ecotourism activities, including becoming scuba guides who can use their unique experience when part of shark viewing dives.

  • Training fishermen in citizen science, shark monitoring, research and offering internships within the SOS community.

  • During their career transition, paying the fair market value for the shark meat they would otherwise be selling, to ensure a halt in shark fishing practices.

Why give?

  • Shark fishing kills an estimated 86 million or more sharks globally per year as of 2023, with 80% attributed to the fin trade.

  • Shark finning is a practice where sharks are caught and their fins sliced off, then the body of the shark is discarded, alive or dead…fins generally are used in Chinese medicine and shark fin soup.

  • People are much more likely to be struck by lightning than be killed by a shark while swimming, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

  • The ever-increasing number of visiting divers to our mesmerizing cenotes requires a number of cavern and cave lines to be replaced and constantly updated.

  • There is a need to install “emergency go-bags” in several locations, so when the CREER Rescue Team (formed of local guides and instructors) gets called it has all emergency response equipment ready.

  • We hope to create signs presenting the fascinating hydrology, and environmental, cultural and religious importance of the cenotes, to help educate tourists and locals.
